Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is once again celebrating further industry recognition after two flagship projects were shortlisted in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Wales Cymru Awards 2026.
Uskmouth Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and the B5605 Newbridge Remediation Scheme are both finalists, nominated for leading the way through innovation and technical excellence.
As the principal contractor for the 230MW Uskmouth development in Newport, the firm has been recognised for its innovation and collaboration in transforming the Sustainable Energy Park into one of the UK’s largest BESS projects.
The £9 million-plus scheme, delivered by Jones Bros for Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners Ltd, involved collaboration with key subcontractors Alistair Burroughs Design Partnership, and Focus MEP.
The Ruthin-headquartered firm has completed enabling works including the creation of the compound, erection of acoustic fencing, and construction of the main platform, alongside supporting the development with an attenuation pond and landscaping.
Jones Bros Senior Contracts Manager Rhys Roberts said: “It’s great to see our efforts at Uskmouth recognised by an industry body, particularly on a project that will make an important contribution to the UK’s net zero targets.
“Working closely with our partners, we’ve been able to transform a contaminated brownfield site while creating opportunities to enhance the surrounding environment, including an 18 per cent biodiversity net gain.
“It is already creating a positive impact locally, with 130 new jobs created as part of its delivery, while the use of rail to transport materials has helped save more than 200 tonnes of carbon.”
The B5605 Newbridge Remediation Scheme in Wrexham involved providing a cost-effective and long-lasting solution to a landslip on Newbridge Road, enabling the road to reopen to the public in October 2025.
Delivered on behalf of Wrexham Borough Council, the project was developed in close collaboration with Mott MacDonald, AtkinsRéalis, and Corderoy, with local suppliers and contractors called upon to support the construction phase.
Ground investigations informed the installation of a 60m-long, 15m-deep bored pile wall and pile cap beam, with 430m³ of concrete transported down the slope before 16,000 tonnes of rock fill was used to achieve the final ground profile.
Jones Bros Senior Contracts Manager Elgan Ellis said: “The B5605 Newbridge Remediation Scheme presented a huge challenge, but through working with our project partners and local contractors, we were able to restore this important route for the surrounding community.
“The steepness of the slope and instability of the soil meant careful planning and a collaborative approach were essential to reach a successful outcome.
“Seeing the road reopen was a significant milestone for everyone involved, and it’s great to see the complex and innovative work carried out receive recognition.”
Winners of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Wales Cymru Awards will be announced on Friday 25 September at The Marriott, Cardiff.
Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 570 people.
The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management, and renewable energy around the UK.
The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced a large percentage of its current workforce, with several of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
