Eisteddfod visitors get to try bridge construction challenge4th Aug 2015

Young people visiting the National Eisteddfod of Wales this week are being encouraged to consider a career in civil engineering by trying their hand at building a model suspension bridge.

The 15-metre bridge, owned by the Institution of Civil Engineers and maintained by Jones Bros, is likely to prove a popular feature at the festival, as visitors have a go at constructing it.

The bridge, modelled on the same design as the second Severn crossing, is made from plywood and aluminium and when completed, it can be walked over.

Dave Gibson, of Jones Bros, said: “We are passionate about encouraging young people to consider careers in civil engineering and the ICE bridge is a great way of practically demonstrating what an exciting career it can be.”
