Huw’s support for CIHT Cymru Wales is recognised with special honour27th Nov 2023

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK chairman Huw Jones MBE received an outstanding contribution honour at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) Cymru Wales Awards.

In front of 200 professionals in the sector, Huw was lauded for his pivotal role in the development of vital infrastructure in Wales, as well as his unwavering support to the country’s CIHT across many years.

A bio showcasing his career journey, from joining the family business as a teenager to becoming managing director in 1976, and then chairman almost three decades later, was read out on the night at Kinmel Hotel and Spa in Abergele.

Under Huw’s guidance, Jones Bros has developed an enviable reputation for highways schemes across Wales, with the civil engineering contractor particularly proud to have constructed the A487 Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass.

Huw received a standing ovation shortly before being presented with a memento by CIHT president Karen McShane and Gareth Smith, CIHT Cymru Wales chair.

He said: “It was an honour and a privilege to be recognised by such an important institution in the world of civil engineering.

“I always look forward to the annual highways dinner and enjoy catching up with acquaintances there, so to have been acknowledged for my role in infrastructure in Wales capped off a great evening.”

CIHT regional chair Gareth Smith was thrilled to present Huw with a memento marking his outstanding contribution to the country’s highways and transport industry.

He said: “Wales, and particularly North Wales, has been very lucky to have a hardworking, talented civil engineer such as Huw Jones, who it was a huge pleasure to meet.

“Huw has provided employment to hundreds of individuals and delivered schemes across the nation. Huw and his company are also playing a huge part in securing the next generation of talent through initiatives such as the opening of a brand-new training centre.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.
