Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK’s in-house fleet is to benefit from enhanced reliability following a successful pilot scheme that will also cut carbon emissions and reduce operational costs.

An eight-month trial with FuelActive saw six Volvo A40G articulated dump trucks (ADTs) fitted with the Cardiff-based company’s fuel pick-up technology and monitored by OEM telematics across 27,000 individual touchpoints.

Comparing the results with half-a-dozen ADTs operating under normal circumstances saw that those machines taking part in the trial consumed nearly four per cent less fuel.

Further potential savings highlighted that the vehicles could save up to 3,400kg of carbon emissions, 1,295 litres of fuel, and £1,450 annually.

This reduction in pollution is comparable to driving a petrol car approximately 11,333 miles, which is almost halfway around the entire circumference of the Earth.

Jones Bros, which is committed to minimising the energy it uses in conducting business and striving towards net zero by 2050, is now set to deploy the FuelActive system across more than 400 of its construction and quarrying machines.

Designed with a dynamic floating pick-up, the kit only draws fuel from the top level of the tank helping to improve combustion and minimise downtime by keeping sediment, water, rust, and metal from contaminating the high-pressure fuel injection systems and damaging engine components.

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 550 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management, and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced a large percentage of its current workforce, with several of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
