Jones Bros achieves gold health and safety standard for 13th year in a row8th Jul 2021

A leading civil engineering company has been recognised for achieving the highest level of health and safety performance for a 13th straight year.

Ruthin-based Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has been awarded a 13th consecutive gold award by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

The award was given off the back of the company’s health and safety performance between the period of January 1 and December 31 2020.

Jones Bros has also been named among the recipients of the President’s Award, given to companies which earn gold award status for 10 or more years in a row.

The RoSPA health and safety awards are one of the most prestigious and recognised schemes in the world, with almost 2,000 entries every year and a reach of more than seven million employees.

Businesses are encouraged to use the awards as a method of benchmarking safety performance year on year and demonstrating a consistent commitment to raising the standards of health and safety at sites.

RoSPA Gold Award winners are recognised for achieving high levels of performance and control of risk, as well as demonstrating well developed occupational health and safety management systems and culture and very low levels of error, harm, and loss.

Mike Jolley, senior health, safety, and environment manager at Jones Bros, said: “To receive the gold award for 13 straight years is a fantastic accomplishment for all of us at Jones Bros.

“The health and safety of our employees, site visitors, and contractors has long been a top priority for us and to be recognised again for our efforts in this field is a huge encouragement to everyone involved.

“Given the challenges presented to the industry by the impact of COVID-19, to be recognised for maintaining the highest standard of health and safety during this challenging period is a great success not just for the health, safety, and environmental team, but for every single member of the company.

“We could not achieve this award without our people on our sites embracing and adapting to changing guidelines and working as hard as possible to maintain and improve health and safety outcomes across all of our operations.”

Over the course of the pandemic, Jones Bros has implemented comprehensive COVID-19 risk assessments and updated site rules, enabling all sites across the UK to adhere to changing local and national government guidelines.

These procedures take into account aspects such as travelling, hygiene and cleaning practices, communication and information, the use of welfare facilities and social distancing guidelines.

Jones Bros has continuously updated COVID-19 procedures to reflect changing guidelines, with the vast majority of tasks undertaken on sites re-assessed to adhere to social distancing requirements, and regular COVID-19 compliance inspections and risk assessments undertaken.

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros’ leadership team consists of members of the second and third generations of the founding family. It employs more than 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced more than 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role.  It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.
