Jones Bros celebrates success at the Constructing Excellence Wales Awards25th Jun 2024

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has earned two prestigious awards from Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW) in recognition of its work on the Morlais development.

The award ceremony saw the Jones Bros and Menter Môn Ltd scheme win the Infrastructure Project of the Year award and the Climate Action award.

Held at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, nominees for Infrastructure Project of the Year were assessed on their ability to effectively execute sustainable strategies, whilst those shortlisted for the Climate Action award were required to develop low carbon materials and solutions.

With Morlais’ potential to generate up to 240MW of low carbon clean electricity, Jones Bros’ design and implementation of civils, electrical infrastructure, and a 6km grid connection to Parc Cybi ensured it met the criteria for both awards.

Huw Jones MBE, chairman of Jones Bros, said: “Receiving the award for Infrastructure Project of the Year is a significant honour. Working on the Morlais project has been both challenging and rewarding.

“This recognition from CEW is a testament to the exceptional teamwork and dedication that went into making the project a success. We are proud to have contributed to such a groundbreaking initiative.”

Speaking about the scheme further, John Idris Jones, Chair of the Morlais Board, said: “Our partnership with Jones Bros is part of this vision to create a sustainable economy in north Wales – as we support local companies to deliver jobs and training across the region.”

“Jones Bros is a respected well-established family business that has delivered our landmark substation to time and budget thanks to their innovation, efficiency, and experience in infrastructure development.”

One of the largest projects of its kind worldwide, Morlais will help Wales reach its climate goals including the reduction of carbon emissions.

Jones Bros’ regional wins have shortlisted the organisation for the CEW National Awards Ceremony on Friday 15 November 2024, in the London Marriott Grosvenor Square.

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.
