Efforts to keep staff safe on a Yorkshire windfarm development have landed a top award for a Jones Bros site manager.
Eryl Evans, who oversaw the construction of the Sixpenny Wood Wind Farm near Howden, has been named the North of England winner at the Building Safety Group’s Site Manager Awards.
29-year-old Eryl, from Ruthin, has overseen a number of proactive initiatives to ensure safety targets are met since construction work on the ten-turbine site began in February 2012.
Eryl said: “It reflects how seriously we take our health and safety, and it’s a credit to everyone who’s worked on site, from the client through to the team, who have really embraced the measures we’ve put in place.
“Jones Bros won a similar award in 2009 for the work on the Tywyn coastal defence scheme, so it just goes to show how high on the list of priorities health and safety is here.”
An initiative to install a notice board, which is updated daily, to alert staff to hazards on site and the discovery of a potentially dangerous situation left by a sub-contractor were among the reasons Eryl was selected for the award.
His efforts to ensure health and safety documents are well organised, the use of fencing and lighting to keep staff safe near trenches and the well-planned layout of the site were also noted by the award’s judging panel.
Jones Bros managing director Huw Jones said he was delighted with the success.
“We’re very proud of Eryl for winning this award. It’s a great achievement in an area of our work that is extremely important.
“The success also reflects the commitment we have to health and safety throughout Jones Bros, and I would like to thank our workforce for the part they played in our achievement.”
