Jones Bros puts Anglesey on the right track after completing active travel route

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has paved the way for healthier living on Anglesey after completing a major £1.4 million active travel route connecting villages across the south of the island.

The leading civil engineering company created a new 1.25km shared pedestrian and cycle path to provide safer, traffic-free access between Newborough and Pen Cob car park, Malltraeth.

Jones Bros also introduced traffic-calming measures and a raised table within Newborough village, alongside four build-outs along Pen Cob. These improvements are designed to enhance visibility and reduce the risk of collisions between motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Appointed principal contractor by Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn, the Ruthin-based firm delivered the scheme on schedule.

The 15-strong Jones Bros team, which included a trainee engineer and trainee quantity surveyor, has helped improve access to key local destinations, including the village centre and Ysgol Santes Dwynwen.

The project also strengthens links to Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest while delivering biodiversity improvements alongside upgraded infrastructure.

Existing footways were resurfaced to encourage people to make healthier travel choices and reduce their reliance on motor vehicles for short journeys.

Jones Bros Contracts Manager Emlyn Roberts said: “We’re proud to have delivered this important active travel route for Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn.

“Despite the challenges of working in a sensitive environmental setting, our team has created a safer, more accessible route that will benefit residents and visitors for years to come.

“We’re also pleased the project has provided valuable opportunities for apprentices to develop their skills. This will support the next generation of construction professionals while delivering a lasting benefit for the community.”

The works form part of Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn’s ambition to enhance connections to the island’s 9.1km Lôn Las Cefni pedestrian and cycle route, which begins in Malltraeth.

It also supports Glasffordd Môn Steering Group’s vision for a green corridor across Anglesey by improving access links to Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest.

The programme was backed via the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund, managed by Transport for Wales, and delivered in line with the Wales Active Travel Act.

Councillor Ieuan Williams, Highways, Waste and Climate Change portfolio holder, said: “We are delighted to see this important active travel link now completed. It is an excellent example of delivering active travel infrastructure in a rural area.

“This scheme has overcome significant challenges, particularly given its location within environmentally sensitive areas, and demonstrates the value of strong partnership working with Natural Resources Wales and others.

“It provides a safer, more accessible connection between Malltraeth and Newborough, while supporting our wider ambitions around wellbeing, sustainability and improving everyday travel choices.”

The project’s wider community benefits saw Jones Bros sponsor new kits for grassroots football club Bryn Rhosyr Juniors under-9s.

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
