Jones Bros receives 11th RoSPA in a row at annual awards ceremony27th Jun 2019

The health, safety, and environment manager of a leading civil engineering firm has praised the company’s attitude towards protecting its workforce after accepting its 11th consecutive health and safety award.

Mike Jolley was presented with a President’s Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) at its annual ceremony at London’s ExCel centre.

And after receiving the accolade, which rewards companies that have won more than 10 RoSPA Gold Awards in a row, the health and safety expert is looking ahead to another year of high standards.

He said: “Winning a President’s Award is a badge of honour in the civil engineering and construction sector, as it shows our health and safety practices have been consistently excellent for 11 years and counting.

“Our next challenge is to transition our safety management system to the new ISO45001 standard, which will ensure that our senior staff, including directors and contract managers, play an active role in setting out best practice.”

In addition to upgrading to the internationally recognised ISO, the Ruthin-based firm is continuing its behavioural safety initiative, Together Safer, which encourages workers to take personal ownership of their safety.

Employees on-site can flag up near misses and unsafe conditions via a mobile app, which is now used for approximately 90 per cent of all reports to the civil engineering contractor.

Mike, who started his role at Jones Bros earlier this year, added: “The company’s training is of a high quality, and ensures every worker steps onto a site knowing how to follow the procedures that keep them and their colleagues safe.

“I’ve also been impressed by the attitude of our site managers and foremen who always have health and safety as their top priority, which sets the right example for everyone to follow.

“I’m confident our health and safety honours list will continue to grow thanks to the support of our fantastic team, which is currently expanding with applications for an advisor as well as assistant now open.”

The RoSPA Awards scheme, which receives entries from organisations around the world, recognises achievement in health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.
