Jones Bros takes three top honours at National Wind Energy Awards

A leading civil engineering firm’s excellence in the wind energy sector has resulted in a trio of victories at a coveted awards evening.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has been crowned Tier 1 Contractor of the Year, while Brockwell Energy’s North Kyle Wind Farm won both the Project of the Year and Onshore Construction Project of the Year at the National Wind Energy Awards.

The 49-turbine wind farm, developed and owned by Brockwell Energy, is now operational near Dalmellington, Scotland, and capable of powering the equivalent of more than 190,000 households. Jones Bros was Principal Contractor for the £300 million scheme.

The Tier 1 Contractor of the Year Award recognises both procurement and execution excellence, with Jones Bros emerging as the winner from a four-strong shortlist thanks to a track record of 59 wind farms, more than £560m of contracts, 2,300MW delivered or under construction, and 600 turbine foundations.

Judges were particularly impressed with the firm’s innovation, pointing to the controlled modulus columns and dynamic compaction, which was used for the first time on a UK wind farm at North Kyle.

Jones Bros also demonstrated excellent social value and safety credentials that include 18 consecutive RoSPA gold awards and the order of distinction.

Garod Evans, contracts director at Jones Bros, said: “We’re thrilled to be named Tier 1 Contractor of the Year. It’s appreciation of the expertise and dedication of our people, as well as the strong partnerships we have with clients and our supply chain.

“We’re proud of the consistency with which our teams deliver complex wind energy projects safely and effectively.”

The Onshore Construction Project of the Year Award identifies excellence in engineering, construction, and installation, with Project of the Year chosen from the winners of the Onshore Construction Project of the Year, Offshore Project of the Year, and Onshore Development Project of the Year categories

Garod continued: “For North Kyle to take home Project of the Year and Onshore Construction Project of the Year is a tremendous honour for everyone who worked on delivering it for Brockwell Energy.

“The scheme brought together many different disciplines and organisations, all working towards a common goal of delivering a major renewable development securely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

“Seeing North Kyle now operational and helping to power more than 190,000 households makes the achievement all the more significant.”

Jones Bros’ recent onshore wind farm contracts also include Sanquhar II, Windy Standard III, Clashindarroch II, Benbrack, and Carno III.

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 570 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including renewable energy, highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, and waste management around the UK.
