Client: SSE Renewables (40 per cent), Equinor (40 per cent), and Vårgrønn (20 per cent)
Contract value:
£62.9M
Contract date:
2019 - 2023
Capabilities:
Energy & renewables Energy project 2024

The project consisted of two phases of the world’s largest offshore wind farm, each with an installed capacity of up to 1.2 gigawatts.

Covering 515km2, Dogger Bank A is approximately 131km from shore at its closest point, as is Dogger Bank B, which covers 599km2.

Jones Bros was engaged to commence with preliminary design work for a fully ducted system for the installation of both high voltage DC (HVDC) and AC (HVAC) cables. This was in conjunction with further design activity.

Works included:

  • 12 access points / junctions off the highway network allowing access to the site
  • Three main site compounds and five satellite compounds
  • 32km of on-site temporary trackway to all access along the full length of the works corridor
  • New post and pre-construction land drainage
  • 46 crossing points over existing open ditch land drains and water courses
  • Horizontal direction drills at 34 crossing points
  • Joint bay design for both HVDC & HVAC circuits including link boxes and the landfall transition joint bay
  • Convertor station working platform
  • Early engagement with third party service assist operators including Network Rail, internal IDB, landowners, and agents

In addition to the offshore works, there were a number of other major activities undertaken to connect the renewable energy to the National Grid including:

  • Installation of 120km of HVDC cable from landfall near Ulrome across a 30km route though agricultural land
  • Construction of two DC to AC convertor stations
  • Installation of 24km of HVAC cable from the convertor station across a 2km route before terminating into the National Grid substation at Creyke Beck substation near Cottingham
