Jones Bros is playing key role in Swansea-based renewables scheme6th Aug 2025

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is assisting Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan’s bid to ‘deliver on green growth priorities’ after activity at Swansea Greener Grid Park ramped up.

Construction work is now underway at the south Wales-based project, which will help keep the lights on during faults or disturbances on the grid and equates to around £70m of investment in the country’s energy transition.

Jones Bros was appointed by principal contractor H&MV Engineering to carry out activity on the Statkraft-led scheme, the first electricity grid stability programme in Wales.

The Ruthin-headquartered civil engineering contractor has undertaken enabling and earthworks, including the installation of a 600m access road.

The 25-strong team has also focused on soil stabilisation and a cut-and-fill operation that involved 10,000m3 of repurposed material, whilst building and equipment foundations for the substation are just getting underway.

Gareth Jones, Jones Bros contract manager, said: “It has been fantastic to work with H&MV on such an important renewables scheme that will be of great benefit.

“As a company whose roots are firmly in Wales, it is always wonderful to be able to undertake significant projects locally.

“With a highly skilled team in place, we are relishing undertaking the next stages of the programme, which continues at pace to the end of the year.”

Jones Bros will also carry out reinforced concrete works for equipment and building foundations, steel erection and cladding for three energy management buildings along with more than 1km in ducting and drainage at the site in Morriston, on the outskirts of Swansea.

Once fully operational, the site will contribute to the delivery of the Welsh and UK Governments’ net zero and energy decarbonisation objectives, helping to make fossil fuels a thing of the past and bolstering the nation’s energy security.

The technology will also assist delivery of a stable, secure, and cheaper power supply to households, businesses and the country’s industrial sector.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Eluned Morgan MS, said: “Wales’ electricity needs could treble by 2050, so it’s important that infrastructure like Statkraft’s Greener Grid Park in Swansea is in place to support the grid and ensure it can cope with the increasing demand in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way.

“Schemes like this are important in ensuring we’re ready to continue the transition to more renewable energy, delivering on one of my priorities for green growth.”

Energy minister Michael Shanks MP added: “This is a huge milestone as work begins on the clean power grid stability scheme in Wales – a prime example of how Great Britain continues to back clean energy technology to unlock investment and power our homes and businesses and make our country a clean energy superpower.

“Together with the Welsh Government, we want to see more projects like this in Wales and across the UK – creating skilled local jobs and propelling us towards our net zero goals.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company continues to run apprenticeships with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
