Rebeca Jones is ready to pick up and run with the baton passed on by Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK colleague Gruffydd Rowlands.
Quantity surveyor Rebeca is part of a new-look six-strong Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Wales Foundation Group after Gruffydd and his team’s two-year tenure came to an end.
Sub-agent Gruffydd’s cohort signed off by hosting a summer lunch, during which it was confirmed that more than £35,000 had been raised for the Sir Gareth Edwards Cancer Charity, a total helped by a 540km cycle from London to Paris.
Rebeca, who attended the event as the new group were formally introduced, said: “It has been really inspiring to see the impact Gruff’s team have had and we look forward to building on the many successes they’ve enjoyed.
“We’ve had a handover period where we’ve been able to pick their brains and formulate our own plan of action.”
Having lifted the Most Promising Trainee Quantity Surveyor trophy at the CECA Wales Awards 2024, Rebeca was no stranger to the organisation’s commitment to the civil engineering industry.
“It’s difficult not to be motivated by the work they have done across two years,” continued Rebeca. “It’s fantastic to be able to help raise awareness of civil engineering as an industry and the opportunities available.
“We are eager to develop what the previous group has done so successfully and add our own stamp with the help of people such as Ed Evans (CECA Wales director).
“As a female in the sector, I’m always keen to showcase the roles we can play and the huge variety of jobs available. It is not just a case of being an engineer or a quantity surveyor.”
Having become the first foundation group to complete a full-term, Gruffydd is thrilled with the impact he and his four colleagues have made.
“It has been wonderful,” he said. “We knew we’d need to be committed and self-motivated, and hopefully, the work we’ve done has confirmed that.
“We’ve raised a lot of money for charity and become friends for life, and if we’ve managed to attract just one person into the industry it has been worth it.
“It’s great that we get to leave the group in the capable hands of the next team, who I’m sure will build on what we’ve done.
“There is the same passion in the new group as there was in ours, which is brilliant, and we will be available to help if needed.”
CECA Wales director Ed Evans said: “We’re delighted that Rebeca has joined our new CECA Wales Foundation Group. She joins a team of six very capable young people from our member companies.
“We have very high expectations of them and if they come anywhere near to emulating the successes of Gruff and his group they will have done extremely well.”
