Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is delivering a significant programme of active travel and safety improvements at two key roundabouts in Flintshire, supporting healthier and more sustainable journeys across Wales.
The North Wales-based contractor is upgrading facilities for pedestrians and cyclists at Ewloe and St David’s roundabouts, located off the A494 trunk road.
Funded by the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund and Flintshire County Council, the scheme will see the installation of six toucan and four zebra crossings, improving access and protection for those moving through the area on foot or by bike.
As part of the works, the existing footway beneath the A494 flyover will be widened and extended, creating a more secure and welcoming environment.
Safety will be further enhanced through the introduction of a Dutch-style roundabout layout with new pedestrian crossings added on the slip roads and at every junction, as well as dedicated cycle lanes that encourage slower vehicle speeds on approach.
The improvements form part of a key school route, which was a primary driver for the scheme, to help create safer, more accessible journeys for pupils and families travelling to and from nearby education providers.
Travel disruption will be kept to a minimum with road closures and groundworks taking place at night to progress the project towards its expected completion date of the end of May 2026.
Jones Bros contracts manager Emlyn Roberts, who will oversee a team of up to 20, said: “With our team’s expertise, I’m confident we will deliver quality results to benefit the local community for generations to come.
“The scheme follows on from our proficiency in delivering active travel routes, such as the Llechwedd Quarry to Blaenau Ffestiniog along the A470, and I hope residents will benefit greatly from the new infrastructure.
“The project also presents a fantastic opportunity for two of our higher apprentices to gain first-hand civil engineering experience on a busy, live site effectively putting theory into practice.”
Councillor Glyn Banks, cabinet member for waste and transportation, said: “This scheme represents an important investment in active travel and pedestrian safety at these busy roundabouts in Ewloe.
“We know the works will cause some short-term inconvenience, and we thank everyone for their patience while these long-term improvements are delivered.”
Alongside the Ewloe active travel route, Jones Bros is currently delivering a similar scheme in Anglesey by creating a 1.25km shared pedestrian and cycle path from Pen Cob car park to Newborough.
Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.
The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.
The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
