University student strengthens his skillset thanks to work experience at Jones Bros28th Jul 2026

A third-year computer science undergraduate believes he’s gained “invaluable experience” with Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK as he reflects upon his two summer work placements with the Ruthin-based firm’s IT department.

From resolving technological issues to setting up wireless internet access on flagship infrastructure projects, Will Bociek has praised his time with the business after completing more than four months of work experience.

The 21-year-old Liverpool John Moores University student was eager to grow his IT skills with the business having repaired laptops for school pupils in a previous role, and applied to join the team.

During his time with the firm, the North Wales local connected new starters to their company accounts, offered effective troubleshooting solutions, and visited major schemes to establish Starlink connectivity in several on-site project cabins, including at the £300 million North Kyle Wind Farm.

The work experience at Jones Bros has since helped Will secure a year in industry placement within a glass manufacturer’s web team.

He said: “The team I worked with at Jones Bros was really nice and supportive, so it was a pleasure to learn from them.

“I was looking for work experience after finishing my first year at university, so I thought the placement was a great chance to build up my knowledge of both software and hardware.

“I also learned a lot about how to effectively problem solve when I was providing first-line IT support, which I now apply in my current workplace when coding webpages, as I understand how to get to the root of an issue in a systematic way.

“Overall, I enjoyed my time with Jones Bros, particularly the opportunity to visit so many different project sites, as it offered something different from simply working in an office all day.

“The experience has definitely enhanced my CV, and I would encourage anyone considering applying to give it a go.”

Jones Bros Senior IT Manager Colin Jones said: “Will was a valued member of the IT team during both summer placements.

“He was enthusiastic, dependable and always willing to learn, while gaining useful practical experience both supporting our users and helping deliver IT services across our project sites. It was great to see his confidence and technical ability develop, and we wish him every success in his year in industry placement.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 550 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management, and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced a large percentage of its current workforce, with several of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
