Jones Bros spotlights health and safety practices in industry webinar

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK’s Mike Jolley spotlighted the family-owned firm’s comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) practices at a key Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North Wales branch webinar.

The Senior Health, Safety & Environment Manager led the session titled ‘Health and Safety in Construction: Together Safer’ by delving into company policies, procedures, systems, and tools, before concluding with a Q&A.

Attendees were granted in-depth insight into the ‘Together Safer’ culture at Jones Bros to better understand how this approach helps the company encourage and promote positive behaviours and mitigate and manage risks across project sites.

The programme in question, which also aims to tackle poor conduct without judgement or consequence, consists of five key messages: be considerate of others, check your work area, understand the job before starting, ask questions and challenge behaviour, and always follow the rules.

Mike also highlighted the importance of the Jones Bros business management system which provides a framework for all site operations and is certified to four International Organization for Standardization (ISO) accreditations including:

  • ISO 45001 Occupational Health And Safety Management System
  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
  • ISO 50001 Energy Management System
  • ISO 9001 Quality Management System

From flow charts that offer instructions and guidance on completing tasks, to the Deltek PIM mobile application that allows field-based teams to capture project data, record site observations, take pictures, and manage risks on the go, Mike believes Jones Bros is well-equipped to safely deliver schemes.

He said: “Health and safety doesn’t just start when we are active on site. From the tendering process onwards, we always consider how we can ensure standards are high and ultimately match stakeholder expectations.

“By offering our team and subcontractors the opportunity to enhance their knowledge by completing modules on training platform Upskill before heading out to a project, we can continue to improve our operations.

“The mindset and attitudes of our staff are also paramount. That’s why we have our ‘Together Safer’ key messages visible across our projects and sites, including on our PPE.

“Overall, I’m thankful for the chance to showcase our practices and culture at such an established industry body event, and I hope those who attended found the talk useful for bolstering their own HSE practices.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management, and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
