Jones Bros celebrate successful completion of Aberdeenshire wind farm9th Sep 2014

Leading civil engineering firm Jones Bros has marked the successful completion of a 25-turbine wind farm in Aberdeenshire.

Jones Bros joined client Fred. Olsen Renewables for the official opening of Mid Hill 1 Wind Farm, located within the Fetteresso Forest, near Stonehaven.

Work began on the 2.3MW Siemens turbines in late 2012 and was completed in July and guests at the official opening ceremony enjoyed a tour of the site, followed by a celebratory lunch.

The project, which was located eight miles away from the nearest public highway, also involved the construction of a metering and transformer building, and an operations centre.

Infrastructure work included widening public highways at four separate locations close to the wind farm, improvements to approximately 18km of site tracks, and laying more than 8km of export cables.

Huw Jones, managing director of Jones Bros, said: “The successful completion of this major contract shows that Jones Bros is now a significant player in the UK market to provide infrastructure services for renewable energy projects.

“The Mid Hill installations were completed on time as planned and this is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our loyal workforce, many of whom have worked for the company for many years.”

The event comes after Jones Bros was selected as the principal contractor for the second phase of the project, Mid Hill II Wind Farm, which involves an additional eight turbines being installed adjacent to the current site.

This latest contract sees Jones Bros installing the balance of plant on the project. Construction work includes the delivery of site tracks, crane pads and the turbine bases, as well as on-site infrastructure.

The eight new 2.3MW turbines will bring the wind farm’s total capacity to 75.9MW, enough to power more than 43,000 homes in the area, making the Mid Hill one of the largest onshore wind farms in Scotland.

The Mid Hill II extension is due for completion in November this year.

Founded in the 1950s and employing almost 300 people, Jones Bros has won contracts to deliver infrastructure for more than 400 wind turbines across the UK.

As well as expertise in renewable energy, the Jones Bros is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, highways, and flood and marine defence.
