Jones Bros schemes shortlisted for esteemed industry awards11th Jun 2026

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK’s proficiency has secured two multi-million-pound projects a place on the Constructing Excellence Wales (CEW) Awards 2026 shortlist.

The B5605 Newbridge Landslide Investigation and Remediation Scheme is in the running for Infrastructure Project of the Year, with the Uskmouth Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development competing for the Regeneration & Conservation Award.

Working closely alongside Mott MacDonald, AtkinsRéalis, and Corderoy to repair a landslip on Newbridge Road in Wrexham, Jones Bros helped design and build a cost-effective, long-lasting development which was opened for public use in October 2025.

The construction phase utilised local suppliers and contractors and included a ground investigation phase, which involved a scheme of trial pits and boreholes.

The information gathered led to the design and installation of a 60m-long, 15m-deep bored pile wall and a pile cap beam, constructed utilising modified articulated dump trucks to haul 430m3 of concrete down the slope.

Once the wall was complete, the slope was built up with 16,000 tonnes of rock fill in layers until the final designed profile was achieved. At the top of the fill a 1m-high wall was constructed and the main road was then reinstated and resurfaced.

Delivered on behalf of Wrexham County Borough Council, the complex scheme has been nominated in its category due to demonstrable collaborative working and its outstanding results and positive feedback from stakeholders.

Jones Bros Senior Contracts Manager Elgan Ellis said: “The team and our partners have worked exceptionally hard to restore this key communal link after the disruption caused by the collapse of a river wall and 40 metres of an anchored wall.

“Although challenging at times due to the steepness of the slope and the instability of the soil in certain areas, careful planning and collaboration enabled us to find the right solutions and complete the project to a high standard.”

As the principal contractor on the 230MW BESS development in Uskmouth, Newport, Jones Bros is transforming the former coal-fired power station to contribute to the UK Government’s net zero by 2050 target.

Appointed by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners Ltd, the Ruthin-headquartered firm, which is working in partnership with key subcontractors Alistair Burroughs Design Partnership Ltd and Focus MEP Ltd, has completed enabling works that included creating the compound, erecting acoustic fencing, and building the main platform.

The development forms part of a sustainable energy park set to feature an attenuation pond, new fencing, and landscaping, and a newly refurbished building (formerly a garage) that has been updated in line with Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) standards.

The £9m-plus project has been shortlisted thanks to the innovation, collaboration, productivity, health, safety, and wellbeing, and digital principles that are being applied throughout the build to upgrade the existing site.

Jones Bros Senior Contracts Manager Rhys Roberts said: “It’s fantastic to see our efforts on such a major renewable energy scheme recognised through this nomination, and as one of the largest BESS facilities in the UK to date, the scheme will play a key role in supplying power to the grid.

“By working closely alongside our partners, we’ve been upgrading the contaminated, brownfield site, enhancing the local ecology, and seeing an 18 per cent increase in the level of biodiversity net gain.

“On top of the obvious benefits associated with sustainable energy and environmental renewal, the project has already created 130 new jobs and saved more than 200 tonnes of carbon thanks to the transportation of materials by rail.”

Winners of the Constructing Excellence Wales (CEW) Awards will be announced on Friday 12 June at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport.
