It’s been a victorious night for Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK as Higher Apprentice Bedwyr Jones scooped up a prize at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Wales Awards 2026.
The 23-year-old shared the Most Promising Trainee Civil Engineer Technician (non-graduate) accolade in recognition of his drive to advance his skillsets and career.
The annual event is a formal way to celebrate the achievements of young talent within the industry.
Bedwyr, who recently completed the HND Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) course, said: “Having first joined Jones Bros on a summer placement, I never imagined I’d win such a prestigious title, so it’s sort of surreal.
“I’ve learnt so much during my time with the firm by gaining hands-on experience at several major projects and I’m thankful for all the team that has helped me progress to where I am today.
“I look forward to continuing to champion my skills and supporting other like-minded young people in the industry to develop their confidence and abilities.”
Bedwyr’s portfolio of past projects includes the A487 Caernarfon and Bontnewydd Bypass and the A470 Llechwedd Active Travel Route, where his responsibilities have increased each time.
He currently works on the £13 million Kinmel Bay coastal defence improvements scheme overseeing interface and communication with both the client and subcontractors.
Contracts Director Hefin Lloyd-Davies, who put Bedwyr forward for the prize, has lauded the apprentice’s performance.
He said: “Bedwyr has continued to live up to his excellent first impression by consistently demonstrating a willingness to learn and excel on our apprenticeship scheme.
“His clear communication style when operating on live sites is brilliant, and it’s been fantastic to see how his confidence has grown.
“Bedwyr’s approachable nature and desire to help others has seen him entrusted with mentoring a first-year trainee engineer, which is great responsibility.
“He is an incredibly hard worker who takes advice on board and acts accordingly, and I’m confident he has the potential to progress to a senior management role in the future.”
Alongside Bedwyr, Jones Bros second-year Higher Apprentices Katie Dolben-Jones and Abel Jones were also shortlisted for accolades at the CECA Wales awards.
Studying towards a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying, Katie’s efforts saw her nominated for the Most Promising Trainee Quantity Surveyor title, whilst Abel was put forward for the Most Promising Trainee Civil Engineer Technician (non-graduate).
Hefin added: “We’re immensely proud of all three of our highly skilled apprentices whose diligence and ambition earned them recognition from an established industry body.
“Their futures are full of promise, and we’re confident their moment will come.”
Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 550 people.
The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management, and renewable energy around the UK.
The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced a large percentage of its current workforce, with several of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
