Havant Thicket Reservoir recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers14th Apr 2026

Havant Thicket Reservoir has been saluted by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) as a shining example of the water sector leading the way in crucial long-term collaboration.

Portsmouth Water’s multi-million-pound development was highlighted in ICE’s flagship State of the Nation 2026 report as a model of the teamwork needed to meet the UK government’s ambitious 10-year infrastructure strategy.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK and Mackley have combined forces as part of Future Water MJJV Ltd, which is the principal contractor for the reservoir’s construction.

The document highlights the alliance between client, contractor, and the supply chain that is building Havant Thicket, noting that the delivery model will need to be copied more widely if the sector is to achieve plans to boost the nation’s water storage capacity on an unprecedented scale.

Deputy Project Director for Future Water and Earthworks Construction Director Geraint Lloyd said: “Collaboration is crucial in any project, especially on one as significant and as sizeable as this one.

“You only have to look at the planning, teamwork, and exceptional focus on display when the 20-tonne steel culvert cut-off wall was installed across 72 hours to know how strong the relationships between the different companies are.

“We will continue working closely together and hitting key milestones to make sure this development is a success.”

As the UK’s first major water-storage reservoir since the 1980s, the environmentally-led scheme will play a vital role in protecting two globally rare chalk streams in Hampshire.

Bob Taylor, CEO at Portsmouth Water, said: “We’re incredibly proud that Havant Thicket Reservoir has been called out as a model for the industry to copy.

“By building a framework rooted in mutual trust and co-operation between us, Future Water, and our supply chain teams, we’re proving that we can deliver on a massive scale alongside genuine environmental care.”
