Jones Bros lands a trio of health and safety award successes24th Jun 2025

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK continues to set the highest of health and safety standards – an achievement underlined by a hat-trick of esteemed industry awards.

The Ruthin-headquartered firm has been rewarded with the prestigious order of distinction by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) after achieving 17 consecutive gold honours.

The contractor also landed The Building Safety Group’s (BSG) best health and safety culture honour for its ‘together safer’ approach, whilst receiving a gold achievement award from Mates in Mind (MiM).

Maintaining a high level of HSE standards throughout the company and on UK-wide schemes, including Havant Thicket Reservoir and Orkney Scapa Deep Water Quay, is vital for Jones Bros.

Casey Parry, HSE coordinator at Jones Bros, said: “It’s wonderful to receive not one, not two, but three awards for our health and safety practices.

“As a company, we are always striving to improve current processes, and this year’s recognition for HSE suggests we are certainly on the right track.

“Safety is not just a priority at Jones Bros, but a core value embedded into every aspect of our work.”

The RoSPA health and safety awards are one of the most prominent and recognised schemes in the world with almost 2,000 entries every year from 50 countries and a reach of more than seven million employees.

Winners are recognised for very low levels of error, injury, and loss, as well as impressive control of risk and highly developed occupational health and safety management systems and culture.

Casey continued: “The annual RoSPA awards are always a key date in the calendar for the HSE team.

“Securing a 17th successive gold is a mark of excellence that helps set us apart when winning new contracts.”

The BSG’s best health and safety culture award is presented to a member that can demonstrate a responsible and positive attitude towards health and safety at all levels of business.

Jones Bros fosters continuous improvement and engagement across the entire company, led by the Together Safer programme, which focuses on the following key principles:

  • Understand the job before starting: Employees review risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), and task briefing sheets (TBS) to fully understand hazards before beginning work.
  • Be considerate of others: Encourages teamwork, communication, and vigilance in ensuring a safe environment.
  • Always follow the rules: Reinforce adherence to company and industry safety standards without compromise.
  • Check your work area: Promotes pre-task and post-task hazard assessments.
  • Ask questions & challenge behaviour: Fosters a culture where employees feel empowered to speak up about safety concerns without fear of retaliation.

Casey added: “This type of acknowledgement wouldn’t be possible without the complete support of each and every individual at Jones Bros.”

MiM recognised Jones Bros thanks to its strength of approach to workplace mental health, from leadership commitment and policies to training and communication.

As long-standing supporters of MiM, the company has embedded resources across sites throughout the UK.

Casey said: “The award came out of the blue as we’d undergone an assessment to see where we could improve.

“The next thing we know is that we’ve been recognised for the work we’ve done and MiM hand delivered the award before delivering a Start the Conversation session.

“These explore the pressures of the construction industry, how to spot signs someone might be struggling, and building confidence to have supportive conversations with others.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defencewaste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
