Jones Bros strikes gold at Considerate Constructors Scheme awards25th Jul 2020

A leading civil engineering firm has been recognised as a considerate constructor for its work on a North Wales renewables project.

Ruthin-based Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK won a Gold Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) 2020 National Site Award for its work at Clocaenog Forest Wind Farm.

The awards judge projects to determine whether site teams have acted in a responsible and considerate way towards local stakeholders and site users.

The civil engineering contractor was judged on its care about site appearance, respect for the community, efforts to protect the environment, site safety and valuing the site workforce.

Jones Bros was appointed by renewable energy developer RWE Renewables to deliver the 27-turbine wind farm, which is capable of generating enough renewable energy for up to 64,000 households annually.

The scheme factored in reusing on site materials, sourcing local labour, inviting local schools and groups to the site and reducing emissions.

Rhys Roberts, project manager, said: “This fantastic achievement highlights the exceptional effort and enthusiasm the team have in setting the standards of considerate construction. Together we’ve reached the impressive standard of performance at the highest level.

“As with all of our projects, we focus on the bigger picture, not just the construction element. We enjoy engaging with the local community to support them as well as minimise disruption where possible.

“Many of the 60 employees on site live nearby and we also had 14 apprentices and trainee engineers gaining valuable experience.

“In addition, we engaged North Wales suppliers for aggregates, sand and cement, further boosting the local economy.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros’ leadership team consists of members of the second and third generations of the founding family. It employs close to 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced more than 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role.  It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.
