Jones Bros expertise drives installation of UK’s most powerful onshore wind turbine10th Aug 2026

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK marked a major milestone with the installation of the UK’s most powerful-ever onshore wind turbine at Sanquhar II Wind Farm in Scotland.

The three-bladed V162-6.2MW EnVentus model, the only one of its kind installed to date in the UK, is perfectly suited to harness the high wind speeds across Southern Scotland.

It is the first of 44 turbines to be installed by Vestas at the renewable energy project. Once operational, the completed scheme will have the capacity to generate up to 308 MW, enough to power more than 335,000 homes each year.

The tier-one contractor prepared the site for the £400 million CWP Energy development. As Principal Contractor, Jones Bros ensured all activity was safely planned, managed, and coordinated, whilst also delivering a substantial package of civil engineering works.

Jones Bros is carrying out the access roads, turbine foundations, crane hardstandings, and associated infrastructure designed to accommodate some of the largest components ever transported to an onshore wind farm in the UK.

Jones Bros Senior Contracts Manager David Nicolson said: “Installing the first turbine is a major milestone, not only for Sanquhar II but for the UK onshore wind sector.

“A development of this scale can only reach this stage through meticulous planning, careful coordination, and genuine collaboration across the Project Team. It has been excellent to see everyone working together so effectively.

“Everyone involved, from the Jones Bros and CWP Energy teams to Powersystems, Vestas, FairWind, BMS, and Collett & Sons Ltd, deserves enormous credit for the commitment and expertise that made this possible.

“With the first turbine successfully installed, our focus now turns to maintaining that momentum and delivering the remaining 43 to the same high standard.”

First power from Sanquhar II, the UK’s fourth-largest onshore wind farm, is expected in late 2026.

Rod Wood MBE, CWP Managing Director, said: “Seeing the first turbine installed at Sanquhar II is a proud moment for everyone involved in the project.

“Reaching this milestone is the result of months of planning, collaboration, and hard work from our partners, including Jones Bros, Vestas, and KFW IPEX Bank.”

Jones Bros has recently expanded its portfolio with key wind projects including North Kyle and Benbrack, alongside current work at Windy Standard III and Clashindarroch II.
