Veteran Mike scoops well-deserved industry award1st Jun 2017

A veteran of the construction sector in North Wales who is now passing on his skills and expertise to the next generation has won a top industry award.

Mike Roberts, of Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, was named winner of the ‘Contribution to the Industry’ category at the recent CECA (Civil Engineering Contractors Association) Wales Awards 2017.

Mike, 72, of Ruthin, began his career with Jones Bros in 1964, operating and maintaining construction plant. Following short spells away working for a related company and as a self-employed contractor, he returned to the family firm.

He now works in the training department at Jones Bros, passing on his wealth of knowledge to the firm’s apprentices.

And there are few who can match him for ‘knowledge, experience and the impact they’ve had on the industry,’ according to colleagues.

Brian Roberts, a former recipient of the CECA ‘Contribution to the Industry’ award, who has worked alongside Mike for many years, said: “Mike has been in the construction industry pretty much all his working life. He is very versatile and capable of operating any type of construction plant and machinery. In fact he could look at a job and know within a short space of time how he was going to do it.”

Mike said: “I was surprised and elated, as well as a little bit shocked, when my name was read out. My family are thrilled and everyone is saying it’s well deserved.

“I love what I do and I enjoy working in the construction industry. When I joined the company in 1964 I was the 18th employee. Jones Bros now employs 350 people and that shows the level of success it has achieved.

“Their success has allowed me to continue doing what I love, and I hope I’m making a difference to young people coming through the training department.”

Huw Jones, chairman of Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, said: “Mike has been a stalwart of Jones Bros, firstly for my dad Glyn and then for me. He’s made his mark across Wales in the many projects he’s worked on for me.

“I was very pleased when he agreed to make the move into the training department as his knowledge and experience are invaluable. I’m very keen to bring youngsters into the business and Mike’s just the man to mould them into the sort of workers we need. I think Mike is a worthy winner of this award.”

Founded in the 1950s and employing almost 350 people, Jones Bros has grown significantly in the last decade. It is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, highways, flood and marine defence and renewable energy projects around the UK.
